NU grad selected for amazing arctic expedition

Nipissing University graduate, Krista Bouwman, has been selected to join a fantastic expedition to the high arctic, exploring Nunavut and western Greenland to snorkel and polar dive to scout, document and record disappearing sea ice.

Bouwman, who graduated Nipissing with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2016 before earning a Master in Marine Management at Dalhousie University, is planning to join the Sedna Epic Expedition August 4 -18. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote in Canada, the expedition team is comprised of women ocean explorers, scientists, artists, educators, adventurers, and medical and scuba diving professionals from Canada, the USA and Mexico. Their aim is to create citizen scientists in Nunavut, empowering youth, girls and young women to become the next generation of Inuit leaders to tackle climate change, ocean change and societal change in the Arctic.

“There are many reasons I want to be a part of this team. The first and most obvious reason is because I love the ocean and am constantly looking for ways I can help protect it. The expedition will give me the opportunity to explore more of the ocean; the arctic has always held a place in my heart and I'm so excited to finally be able to experience this part of the ocean,” stated Bouwman on her gofundme page.

“The second reason I want to be on this trip is because of the people I will meet. I am so excited to learn about my team members; their stories, how they came to be in the environmental field and anything else they can teach me. Additionally, I will be doing outreach and education in various Inuit communities which will also allow me to meet the next generation of ocean explorers. The Inuit communities have such a personal relationship with the ocean; I want to listen to their stories and hopes for the future of the arctic. Above all else, I'm excited about what I will learn from everyone I meet during this trip.”
