Frequently Asked Questions

Ceremony FAQs

Are the ceremonies in person? Where are the ceremonies taking place?

Yes, all ceremonies will take place at the R.J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre, 100 College Drive, North Bay, Ontario. 

How do I get my regalia (gown & hood)?

Graduates do not need to pre-order their regalia (gown & hood) for Convocation and there is no charge for using the regalia.

Graduates will receive an e-mail towards the end of May with information on when and where to pick-up and return their regalia.

Graduates are encouraged to pick up their regalia at least an hour to 45 minutes ahead of their ceremony. 

How long is my Convocation ceremony?

Convocation ceremonies vary between an hour and a half to two hours (1.5-2) in length. 

How many guests can I invite?

Graduates are asked to limit their guests to a maximum of 4 people to allow all graduates to bring their supporters.

There is no ticket system to attend the convocation ceremonies.

How can I request accessible seating and/or support?

If you or your guests require any accommodation at the ceremony (such as accessible seating), please contact Maggie Horsfield (convocation@nipissingu.ca) by e-mail. Volunteers will be available on-site to assist at the ceremonies.

Will the ceremonies be livestreamed?

Yes, the convocation ceremonies will be livestreamed. The links will be made available before the ceremonies. Visit www.nipissingu.ca/convocation on the day of the ceremony for more information.

What are the COVID-19 protocols?

More details regarding COVID-19 protocols, including a decision on whether masks will be required, will be communicated closer to the date.

Will graduates receive more instructions and information?

Yes, graduates can anticipate receiving e-mails from the University in the month of May that will cover information such as: 

  • What time to arrive for your ceremony
  • Where you go to get your regalia (gown & hood) 
  • Parking instructions 

These instructions are sent out towards the end of May. 

Other FAQs

Do I need to apply to graduate? How do I do so?

Individuals who apply to graduate for the April 1 deadline will receive their degree in the mail near the beginning of June.

Please ensure that your mailing address is up to date on WebAdvisor.

For questions about your degree, please contact graduation@nipissingu.ca.

I cannot attend Convocation, how do I collect my degree?

Please ensure that your mailing address is uptodate on WebAdvisor. The Registrar's Office will mail your degree to you in mid-June if you do not attend Convocation. 

How do I schedule a session for graduation photography?

Prestige Lifetouch Photography will be present during the week of Convocation to provide graduation photography services. More information will be available closer to the ceremony dates.

Can I borrow regalia for photos?

If you would like to borrow regalia for photos, please email convocation@nipissingu.ca.Note that the Graduation Photographer on campus has access to regalia (robes & hoods) for your session. 

How do I order a degree frame?

Degree frames are available for purchase all year and make great gifts!

Did you know that you can stay in Residence while you are on campus for Convocation? Nipissing University alumni receive a special discounted rate for their stay:

  • Single room within a 4-bedroom suite: $35.40/night plus HST

Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board

Your Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board (NUAAB) is an integral part of the University community. When you graduate from Nipissing University, you automatically become a lifetime member of the Nipissing University Alumni Association at no charge and part of a wide network of NU Alumni who are making an impact!

The NUAAB is guided by up to ten Nipissing University Alumni with additional student and community representation. The NUAAB has three main objectives:

  • supporting and advancing the cause of the University by strengthening its standards and reputation for academic excellence through dedication and financial generosity;
  • promoting interest and understanding of the Association's objectives among undergraduates of the University;
  • encouraging and promoting a sense of collegiality and unity among members and providing an opportunity to continue associations enjoyed as students.

I received a Governor General Academic Award. When and how do I receive the award certificate?

Congratulations on receiving the Governor General’s Academic Medal.

The Governor General’s Medal, established in 1873, is one of the most prestigious awards that can be received by a student in a Canadian educational institution for exceptional academic achievement.

The Gold Medal is awarded to the graduate student who achieves the highest academic standing upon graduation from a graduate level.

The Silver Medal is awarded to the undergraduate student who achieves the highest academic standing upon graduation from a bachelor's degree program.

The certificate will be provided to the recipient during Convocation otherwise it will be sent to the recipient by mail.

I received a President’s Gold Medal. When and how do I receive the medal and award monies?

Congratulations on receiving the President’s Gold Medal.

The President’s Gold Medals are presented to a graduating student who attains the highest academic average in their degree program. Students must have a minimum of 80% overall average. Each recipient will receive a President’s Gold Medal and a cash award of $500.

The Financial Aid Office will credit the recipient’s account receivable on WebAdvisor. The funds can then be directly deposited into the recipient’s bank account.

The award will be provided to the recipient during Convocation, otherwise it will be sent to the recipient by mail.

I received a J.W. Trusler Proficiency Award. When and how do I receive the medal and award monies?

Congratulations on receiving the J.W. Trusler Proficiency Award.

The J.W. Trusler Proficiency Awards are presented to graduating students, in each major. The recipients are chosen by the respective faculty of each major, primarily on the basis of academic achievement and/or excellence in practice teaching. Each student will receive a Bronze Medal and a cash award of $300.

The Financial Aid Office will credit the recipient’s account receivable on WebAdvisor. The funds can then be directly deposited into the recipient’s bank account.

The award will be provided to the recipient during Convocation, otherwise it will be sent to the recipient by mail.
