Celebrating donors, connecting with students

Last week, Nipissing University welcomed the generous donors who provide funding for scholarships, bursaries and awards to campus for the annual Student and Donor Awards Social. The event brings student recipients together with the donors who fund the scholarships, awards and bursaries. It is an opportunity for students and donors to make meaningful connections and learn the stories behind the donor’s motivation to give. Whether it is to honour a loved one, a dedication to education, or a desire to give back to the community by supporting students, each award has a unique, often inspiring story. The social also provides an opportunity for the donors to learn about the students they are helping, how and why they chose their area of study, what brought them to Nipissing, how life has shaped them and their goals for the future.

The common bonds created bring a sense of joy to the room as students and donors are swept up in conversation and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to give.

Speaking on behalf of the student recipients, Abbey Thompson thanked the donors for their support.

“By donating to student awards and bursaries you are investing in ensuring that students can continue the pursuit of their goals and ambitions,” she said. “As students, it’s inevitable that finances are going to be a stressor at some point, if not for the entire duration, of our postsecondary career. I know I speak on behalf of the students here in saying that when I received the news of my award I had an immediate flood of relief and gratitude.”

Nipissing University congratulates all the recipients and offers a sincere thank you to all of the donors.
