Meet student leader Jessica Dubie

Nipissing students consistently impress as leaders, in the classroom, on campus and in the community. Recently the university celebrated 25 student leaders at the annual Dave Marshall Leadership Awards. Over the coming months, NU News will introduce each student leader to the wider community with a short article discussing their accomplishments and activities. Today, we are pleased to profile bachelor arts in criminal justice student, Jessica Dubie.

Dubie is a dedicated student who has successfully balanced her academic work with important community involvement. Her contributions to the community are significant and range from caring for the elderly to hosting an international student. She also has considerable experience volunteering for the Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre.

Dubie completed an extensive, two-month training program on crisis-intervention and on subjects such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and violence against women. This training taught strategies such as coping, grounding and how to provide support. She also volunteered regularly with Amelia Rising in the clothing bank, where she interacted with victims and survivors of sexual assault.

Beyond this, Dubie participated in the Women on the Inside Initiative, where volunteers enter the local North Bay prison to provide services and activities for women. Lastly, she has volunteered at Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre booth which involved educating the public about sexual violence, while also being available to provide support for victims.

Dubie is a superb example of a person who uses her education to help improve the lives of marginalized populations. She is an intelligent, industrious, and academically capable student. She is passionate about justice issues relating to sexual violence and has already proven her commitment to giving back to the community.

The university community recognizes Jessica Dubie with a Dave Marshall Leadership Award in the Community Category.
