iLead students working in Jamaica

Camp Millbrooks

Camp Millbrooks

The students and faculty will be working with Camp Millbrooks, located about 40 minutes from Montego Bay in the Tangle River area.  The team, headed by Professors Linda Piper and Natalya Brown, will assist Camp Millbrooks with their ongoing plans for the development of an eco-wellness centre, an eco-agri business, and a cultural centre focusing on the history of the Jamaican people.

The annual trip to Jamaica is an integral component of the School of Business iLEAD program, offering learning through experience, action and discovery. This is the sixth time that Nipissing students have travelled to Jamaica as part of the iLead program. The team will be working in Jamaica from February 21 – February 28.

The students began background research and preparing for their on-site visit in January. Once their on-site visit is completed, the students will return to the classroom and work on developing their final recommendations for the camp management. The students have been preparing by learning about Jamaican culture and tourism and have been working with their instructor on business theory and various models for ecotourism ventures. Discussions with the owners of Camp Millbrooks were initiated by the instructors in early December 2016, and conversations have been ongoing.

The students are a diverse academic group that includes business students Stephen Mason, Jordon Staroba, Dakota O’Hara, Olivia Hall, and Clare Johnson. Daniel Goldsmith is a history student with a minor in business, Emily Horn studies social welfare and social development, and Skye Duncan is a science student working under the direction of Professor Peter Nosko.

The team’s focus is on marketing and social media promotions, financial and staffing concerns, and basic operational issues associated with establishing and offering visitors a comprehensive tourism experience.
