Nipissing welcomes its first sorority

With the founding of its first sorority, Alpha Gamma Phi, Nipissing University has added Greek Life to its list of student organizations on campus.

Founded by students, Hayley Heaslip, Business Administration-Marketing; and Kat Stewart, Fine Arts - Minor in Business Administration; with assistance from council members Cael Nisbet, Laura Wilkes and Emily Breault, during the summer of 2015, Alpha Gamma Phi is now on campus. The sorority's goal is to bring together, empower, and inspire strong female students at Nipissing University. This year, the sisterhood has 27 members as well as adviser, Nipissing Alumna, Maggie Daniels.

Alpha Gamma Phi's two core philanthropies are the Canadian Cancer Society, and the North Bay Humane Society, with a goal of raising $1,000 for each by the end of this academic year. The sorority also hopes to support other endeavours within the Nipissing and North Bay communities. So far this year the women of Alpha Gamma Phi have donated wish list items and will be donating $300 to the North Bay Humane Society. They will also be participating in Relay for Life at Nipissing on March 5, and have already raised $190. 

As a sisterhood, Alpha Gamma Phi participates in social activities, like a Winter Retreat at the Canadian Ecology Center, slumber parties, sporting events, afternoon skates, and holiday parties.  They will be launching other activities soon, like weekly study dates and scavenger hunts during the remainder of the year. The sorority meet bi-weekly at the school for Chapter Meetings where they plan and discuss their events, and receive updates from the executive council.
