Dr. Cho named Art Educator of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Christine Cho, assistant professor in the Schulich School of Education, Brantford, who has earned the Post-Secondary Art Educator of the Year Award from the Ontario Art Education Association.
The award honours excellence in teaching as well as leadership and contributions to art education. Winners are chosen by an outside adjudicator. Dr. Cho was nominated by her students and a former colleague.

“This award is a great honour,” said Dr. Cho. “I teach the visual arts course using a flipped classroom model - so it's innovative and engaging for non-artists who may be asked to teach art in their future work in schools. I am motivated to ensure students in elementary and intermediate schools get as much exposure to the arts as possible so I try and infuse my passion into my courses with future teachers to build up their confidence.”

“One can easily tell how passionate Dr. Cho is about teaching, visual arts, and her students by participating in any of her online lectures or in class sessions. During our online lectures, it is evident Dr. Cho puts a lot of effort into ensuring students receive customized lessons created specifically for her students,” wrote student Michelle Knott in her nomination letter.  “We, as students of Nipissing University, are very fortunate to learn from her expertise and passion for the arts.”

"I nominated Dr. Cho because of her ability to make Visual Arts (a subject I am not strong in) a class that I look forward to attending each week. It is a quality of hers that I would like to embrace in my own teaching practices so that my students feel capable of completing tasks in subjects they are not comfortable with," said student Daniel Yakymyshyn.

Dr. Cho will receive her award at a special ceremony in late February at the Artscape Youngplace in Toronto.
