Master of Science in Kinesiology announced at NU
To address the growing demand for expertise in health and rehabilitation across Canada, Nipissing University is pleased to announce a new graduate degree opportunity, the Master of Science in Kinesiology (MScKin).
The new MScKin degree will help prepare students to meet the burgeoning demand in the fields of exercise therapy, disability management, workplace health and safety, health related sales and service, and rehabilitation.
Students can begin applying for the MScKin degree now. Classes will begin in September 2016.
The MScKin degree builds on the success of Nipissing’s Bachelor of Physical Health and Education (BPHE) degree program. Interested students can expect a research-intensive thesis-based program. Students will have the opportunity to conduct research in Nipissing’s new $7.5 million Centre for Physical Health and Education. The facility features world-class funded labs, including Sensory Movement Behaviour Lab, Psychology of Physical Activity and Health Promotion Lab, Biomechanics and Ergonomics Lab, and Exercise Physiology Lab.
Since 2012, BPHE faculty have earned more than $2.4 million in research grants from agencies including the Canadian Institute of Health research, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Sport Canada, Canada Foundation for Innovation, Public Health Agency of Canada, and ParticipACTION.“This is a big step forward on a number of levels, for Nipissing as a comprehensive university, for the BPHE program’s growth, and for the Northeastern Ontario region,” said Dr. Jim McAuliffe, director of the School of Physical Health and Education at Nipissing University. “We’ve experienced a lot of interest in a Kinesiology degree from potential students and we are launching an excellent degree program here. The faculty are exceptional teachers and researchers with an impressive track record of earning grants and publishing their work in peer refereed journals. Currently they have more than 200 publications to their credit.”
Nipissing’s MScKin program was approved for funding by the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities on July 30, 2015.
