NU students receive over $2 million in student awards

Nipissing University will provide more than $2 million to students in the form of academic-based and needs-based scholarships, bursaries and awards this academic year.

The university recently held its annual student and donor awards social, celebrating the generosity of donors and providing an opportunity for students who received awards to thank the individuals responsible for the funding.

In the 2013-14 academic year, Nipissing provided roughly 1,500 separate academic-based and needs-based scholarships, bursaries and awards to students. These awards often make a significant contribution to a student’s university education by assisting with living costs as well as the cost of books and supplies.

“Thank you to the donors for the generous contributions they have made over the years, not simply for the financial aid provided, but also for the recognition, support, and encouragement it gives us. Your generosity sends the message that you believe that we are worth investing in,” said student spokesperson Sarah Jayne Connick, who received the Nipissing University Alumni Association Sociology Award.

“Donors give to student awards because we see ourselves in the grateful recipients and remember exactly what it was like to be recognized, and to have our burden eased, even in a small way,” said Genevieve DeBruyn, who spoke for donors on behalf the Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board.
