Lecture on Mental Training in Sport

Nipissing University is pleased to welcome Dr. Ashwin Patel to campus for a special lecture on the Mental Training in Sport on Thursday, September 18 at 7p.m. in the Weaver Auditorium (room B200).Dr. Patel will be discussing his applied sport psychology work in Canada and the United States with professional, collegiate, and high school athletes. Core discussion points regarding sport psychology will focus on resilience, improving self-awareness, and W.I.N. – present focus (What’s Important Now).
Dr. Patel, holds a BA in Psychology and History from the University of Guelph and an MA and PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Tennessee. Upon completing his degrees he took a position at Western State Colorado University where he taught for seven years, earning tenure in 2010. During his time at WSCU he taught 13 different courses in the Exercise and Sport Science program. He developed the Sport Psychology minor and served as the faculty advisor for the Sport and Fitness Management emphasis. He also served as the chair of Academic Policies for three years and provided mental training services for 10 National Championship athletes, in addition to working with teams and coaches in the Gunnison Valley. Over the past two years he has served as a consultant for Action Learning Associates an organization specializing in designing and delivering customized programs for leadership development and high performance teams. He joined the Humber faculty in 2013.  Dr. Patel has given presentations on Sport and Exercise Psychology at worldwide and regional Sport Psychology, Exercise Physiology, and Coaching Conferences. He worked two years as a manager for a strength and conditioning coach who trained professional athletes, four years with a professional minor league hockey team, and 15 years as a tennis instructor. He is in the final stages to become an Association for Applied Sport Psychology Certified Consultant.
