English Day welcomes high school students

Recently, the English department opened the curtain of university academia to give a group of local high school students a peak at life and studies at Nipissing during English Day.

The department welcomed 50 students and six teachers from two area high schools, Widdifield and West Ferris.

The visitors were invited to join NU students in Professor Kristen Lucas’ first year English course, Love and Loss, where they took in a lecture about how to unpack a short story and participated in a lively question and answer session. After being treated to lunch, with English student ambassadors on hand to answer questions about Nipissing and the English Studies program, the high schoolers were organized into groups for campus tours, with featured stops at the library, residences and the newly expanded Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.

From all accounts, the students were attentive, engaged and well-behaved, even during an inadvertent lockdown announcement.

Based on the very positive response to the very first English Day, the department of English Studies is already planning for a repeat performance for high school students in the Winter Term.
