Recently, three Nipissing alumni participated in the 52nd Annual Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (TOAE). Ben Barak (2012), Amy Cook (2013), and Jaymie Lathem (2011) all BFA graduates from our Fine Arts program were selected by jury to exhibit their work in the exhibition.  The TOAE is the largest, juried outdoor art exhibition in Canada and showcases contemporary fine art and craft. It takes place every year in July at Nathan Philip Square in Toronto. This year at the TOAE, Amy Cook was awarded the Best of Drawing and Illustration in the student category and last year Jaymie Lathem won the Best of Watercolour.  Each year the TOAE receives over 1200 applications, but only accepts 400 artists to exhibit and from those accepted only a select few go on to win awards. Our students, by being selected for the exhibition and by winning awards are proving that they can compete at a provincial and national level.
“The Department of Fine and Performing Arts is extraordinarily proud of these three students for what they have achieved through their participation in this important event,” said Amanda Burk, Associate Professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts.  “We are excited that our students are competing on a national stage and winning awards. We think that it says a lot about our students and our program.”
In October 2013, Jaymie will be participating in an artist residency project called You Are Here: Visualizing Place at the Gateway to the North where participating artists will be creating site-specific work in various locations in and around North Bay.
Benhas been chosen to participate in an art mentorship project at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg where he will be mentored by Canadian landscape painter David McEown.
