NU students hear from Coach4Food founder

Tom Hedican, speaks to class

Tom Hedican, the man behind the highly successful Coach4Food program and a professional goaltending consultant, spoke to students at Nipissing University last week about his coaching expertise, his inspiration for Coach4Food and importance of helping those in need.

Hedican was invited to speak to Dr. Mark Bruner’s third-year coaching class in the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program. As a special nod to Hedican’s work, the class ran a Jersey4Food drive, they wore a sports jersey and donated food to the Nipissing University Food Bank.

The Coach4Food campaign was launched in North Bay in 2005 and raised, through cash and food contributions, over 1,000 pounds its first time around. By 2010, the drive had grown to the point where it was responsible for nearly 108,000 pounds.

Hedican discussed how Bruce Springsteen had inspired him to start the program in 2005.  Springsteen devotes a portion of each of his concerts to promoting the importance of giving to the Food Bank and helping others.
