Geometric approaches to bus scheduling

Recently Dr. Tzvetalin Vassilev, of the department of computer science and mathematics, and student, Laura Huntington, presented the results of their summer research project to administrators at Ontario Northland.The presentation was part of the Industrial Mathematics initiative, and a continuation of the partnership with Ontario Northland that started in 2011.
Huntington, a Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Award recipient, who worked under Dr. Vassilev’s supervision, discussed her study of the current service network of Ontario Northland from geometric perspective. Her talk was titled Geometric Approaches to Bus Scheduling in Northern Ontario.
Following Huntington's talk, Dr. Vassilev presented short summary of the progress on the project, ideas for funding and the future of the project in general.
The Industrial Mathematics initiative of the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics is aimed at establishing lasting partnerships between the university and local industry. The department solicits industrial problems and works to provide solutions to them by engaging the faculty, undergraduate and graduate students in research and practical experience. The initiative facilitates an understanding of the university’s research capabilities by local industry while creating opportunities for students in the form of internships and employment.  Projects like this also allow students to extend their learning and experiences beyond the classroom and into the real world.
