Sociologist discussing racial profiling

Nipissing University is pleased to welcome Dr. Vic Satzewich to campus for a presentation on racial profiling and discretionary authority among immigration officers.

The lecture takes place on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 7 p.m. in room H106.

Satzewich, professor of Sociology at McMaster University, is working on a cluster of projects with Dr. William Shaffir centered on policing and racial profiling.  They are researching how police services in small and medium sized cities in Ontario understand the challenges and opportunities related to having a diverse array of immigrants in their communities.

Satzewich is also working on a project that analyzes how overseas immigration officers understand and apply their discretionary authority when it comes to assessing applications for permanent and temporary residence in Canada.

He has written a number of books including Racism in Canada, Race and Ethnicity in Canada: A Critical Introduction, and The Ukrainian Diaspora. He also written and co-written approximately 50 different scholarly articles and chapters.

In 2002-03, Satzewich served as the president of the Canadian Sociological Association. In 2006, he was awarded the Canadian Sociological Association Outstanding Contributions Award.

The lecture is presented by Nipissing’s Department of Sociology and the Sociology Club. It is free of charge and all are welcome to attend.
