Nipissing Brantford student nominated for YMCA Peace Medal

Congratulations to Rebecca Vandekamp, a Schulich School of Education student at Nipissing’s Brantford campus, who has been nominated for a YMCA Peace Medal.

YMCA Peace Medals honour the achievements of individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to fostering a culture of peace in their communities.

Vandekamp has shown leadership on campus and in the community. Organizations she has volunteered with include The Brant/Brantford Roundtable on Poverty, the Downtown Brantford Business Improvement Area, Why Not City Missions and Freedom House Church. Issues she has concentrated on include reducing poverty, community building and youth mentorship. She also spent three months in Kenya in 2011 doing community development work and research.

The awards ceremony will take place on November 26 at the Branlyn Community Centre in Brantford as part of the fifth annual YMCA Multicultural Festival for newcomers to Canada.
