POSITION TITLE: NU GATEWAY STUDENT LEADER

RATE OF PAY: $14.25/HOUR + vacation as Determined by HH Policy

JOB DESCRIPTION:

NU Gateway is a new program and support team at Nipissing University that works with all incoming first-year students providing online support.  First-year students will be connected with a Gateway Community Leader. 

Gateway Community Leaders are a group of upper-year students, passionate about fostering social connections and providing peer support to the NU Gateway cohort. This includes event planning, peer-led communications campaigns, and working with staff and faculty members for student engagement initiatives.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

This position will assist with the following:

  • Conducting virtual one-on-one meetings and virtual drop-in meetings with assigned Gateway Community members to monitor progress and provide resources and referrals;
  • Coordination and facilitation of student-focused events (online format September - December)
    • Organize and facilitate virtual events throughout the academic year that connect new NU Gateway students. 
    • Facilitating regular community-building initiatives within their assigned NU Gateway group and in the greater NU Gateway community.
    • Help expand new NU Gateway students’ social networks through personal interactions and facilitating wider campus connections in an online format. 
    • Support, enhance and develop the academic and social experiences of peers and build a sense of community within the NU Gateway program and the greater Lakers community.
  • Engage in personal and professional skill development 
    • Develop tangible skills that can be used in both an academic and career environment such as teamwork, professional communication, conflict management, meeting planning and facilitation, and network building. 
    • Actively participate in opportunities that are integrated into the training and development for Peer Educators, which includes key training sessions and team-building activities.
  • Provide excellent service to students and partners 
    • Use personal experiences in the Lakers community to support and encourage new NU Gateway students.
    • Introduce NU Gateway students to valuable campus resources and continue to build the connection to resources through communication and collaboration.
  • Role model outstanding student leadership on campus
    • Displaying professional communication in regular contact with students through e-mail, virtual one-to-one or in virtual small groups to foster coaching relationships and provide timely referrals to appropriate campus and community resources.
    • Embrace the role of an ambassador for student leadership and as a representative of Nipissing University.
    • Understand the role of a NU Gateway Leader within the student leadership in the Lakers community.
    • Providing a warm, welcoming and safe environment for any student to discuss their academic and overall Lakers experience.
    • Refer students to a variety of different services/resources across campus and in the community as required.
    • Draw on your own student experience to provide compassionate and relevant coaching conversations.
    • Conducting yourself in a way that is consistent with the core values of student leaders as outlined in the Student Leader Training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student (2nd year and above) with strong academic standing (cumulative average of 75% or higher).
  • Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Nipissing University programs, initiatives, and services that promote student academic and personal success.
  • A commitment to promoting an inclusive and welcoming environment, both within and outside of the Lakers community.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new and challenging experiences with a positive mind-set. 
  • Ability and willingness to work independently and as part of a team with students, volunteers, and staff.
