POSITION TITLE:                            Greenhouse and Herbarium Student Assistant                                                         

EMPLOYMENT DATES:                 November 1, 2022 through to April 30, 2023

HOURS OF WORK:                        Average 5 hours per week

RATE OF PAY:                                 $15.50/hour plus Vacation Pay

JOB DESCRIPTION: The successful candidate will provide assistance in the operations of spaces in the department of biology and chemistry dedicated to plants, including the two rooftop greenhouses and the Nipissing University herbarium. Working under the supervision of the department chair, the assistant will be expected to help organize workspaces, manage collections of live and pressed plants, catalogue specimens, and develop inventories of supplies (e.g. pots, soil)as required. A high level if diligence and attention to detail is required, and familiarity with plants, greenhouses and/ore herbaria would be an asset.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

Organizing workspaces and storage areas in the greenhouses and herbarium, cataloging specimens in the herbarium system, maintaining populations of plants, organizing and maintaining an inventory of greenhouse supplies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must apply and be approved for the NUWORK Program
  • Comfortable communicating with faculty, staff and students.
  • Confident in asking questions if uncertain about any directions or instructions
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities and work well under pressure
  • Previous greenhouse or herbarium experience is an asset
  • Second year student minimum
  • Botanical experience is an asset
  • Strong organization skills are an asset
