POSITION TITLE:                         Peer Academic Tutor (3 Positions), Office of Indigenous Initiatives

EMPLOYMENT DATES:               September 2019 to April 2019 (24 weeks)

HOURS OF WORK:                    Average 4-10 hours per week

RATE OF PAY:                           $14/hour as determined by HR policy

                                      

JOB DESCRIPTION:               

As the Peer Academic Tutor, you will assist with facilitating student success, study skills and learning sessions for Indigenous students at Nipissing University. You will assist with preparing, organizing and leading individualized and small group activities, acting as a mentor and academic coach (tutor). The Peer Academic Tutor will concentrate on academic activities and provide resources and guidance on lectures, homework assignments and exam preparation.

 

DUTIES INCLUDE:

This position will assist with the following:

  • Creating a positive learning environment for new and returning students
  • Academic and social support and guidance
  • Provide weekly drop in hours and individual appointments
  • Compiling and organizing written daily student log reports
  • Debrief meetings with Student Success and Development Coordinator

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated competence in academics
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with Internet and search engines
  • Good communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Previous experience in a one-to-one tutoring or homework club setting
  • Awareness of Indigenous communities and cultures
