Start by Believing Day is an opportunity for communities across the country and around the world to unify with a single voice for survivors of sexual violence in our community:

We believe you, and we are here to help.

Why start by believing?

Sexual violence is the only violent crime in Canada not on a decline. In 2021, there were 34,242 police-reported sexual assaults, representing 90 incidents per 100,000 population marking the highest rate since 1996. Even though we know that the rates of sexually violent crimes are increasing, the odds of sexual violence getting reported to the police is 80% lower than any other violent crime in Canada, with only about 6 percent of assaults reported to the police.

When we Start by Believing, we create a culture of care where survivors are empowered, supported, and encouraged to seek justice.
