Lakers Break the Ice on Mental Health

Nipissing University’s Sport Marketing class is teaming up with NU Listens, the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation and our Lakers varsity hockey teams to raise funds and awareness for mental health and emotional wellness.
On Saturday, November 12th, Lakers Break the Ice on Mental Health returns after a 2 year COVID hiatus. Over 50% of students have felt so depressed that they have difficulty functioning, and 16.4% of students have seriously considered suicide (The National College Health Assessment, 2019). These statistics are what inspire us to leverage sport in a way that can help create awareness, support conversations and transform mental health by encouraging people to talk openly about mental illness and to ask for help when needed.
Past Break the Ice Events have raised over $40,000 for important community causes. This year’s event will once again benefit our community by uniting Nipissing University, North Bay hockey fans and corporate supporters for exciting varsity hockey, strong community spirit, and entertaining fundraising for mental health support. The support of Nipissing staff and faculty has a tremendous impact on the success of our event. Students look forward to showcasing their efforts and to welcoming many on Saturday, November 12th.
