Human Library
What is a Human Library? A Human Library is a way for people to connect with individuals in their community that have experienced stigma, discrimination and/or prejudice. The goal is to celebrate differences and encourage understanding one conversation at a time in a safe environment. More detailed information about the concept can be found at the Human Library Organization website.
During the event, Readers “borrow” a Human Book and engage in one-on-one conversation with them for a scheduled “reading” session. “Readings” will be scheduled for 30 minutes, but Readers or Human Books can stop the conversation at any time, as your comfort level and safety are a priority.
We will be booking 30-minute Readings for each Book. Registration is required: to book a “book” please visit the entrance of the library on the first floor (in-person, during event time only). Staff will be available to assist.
Readings will take place in individual rooms that each have a glass wall, so there is good visibility but also some privacy. One of the Human Library Committee members is a Registered Social Service Worker/Peer Support Worker who will be available to support the Readers and Books, if needed.
