Dr. Ron Hoffman was formerly an instructor and the coordinator of mental health training at the Ontario Police College (OPC), a centralized police training facility operated by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Prior to his commencing duties at OPC, Ron held various positions including police officer, probation and parole officer, and college teacher. While at the Ontario Police College, he coordinated the Basic Constable Training (recruit), Advanced Patrol Training (refresher), Coach Officer Training (field training officer), and Crime Prevention Training Programs, and was responsible for reviewing Coroners’ Inquest recommendations pertaining to police training and procedures.

​Police response to persons with mental disorders; Communication and de-escalation techniques used by police officers; 

Mental health screening performed by front-line emergency responders; 

Forensic mental health system in Ontario; 

Police response to vulnerable populations; 

Probation and parole.

Research Interests:

​Developing evidence-based police training for responding to persons with serious mental disorders;Mental health and cognitive status screening by front-line criminal justice personnel; 

Characteristics of persons with mental disorders who have frequent contact with police officers; 

Persons with intellectual developmental disabilities and the criminal justice system.
