New Exhibit Honours Legacy of Paul Commanda and Indigenous Guides
ArticleA new exhibit, developed in partnership with Nipissing First Nation, Dokis First Nation, Nipissing University and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (Pittsburgh), is now on display at the North Bay Museum, honouring the work of Paul Commanda, the Nbisiiing Guides and their contributions to science. Entitled Our Guides are Really Going Places/Nishnaabeg e-paamwingewaad waasa zhaawag: Nbisiiing Guides and the Legacy of Paul Commanda, the exhibit showcases the photographs and stories of the Indigenous Guides who led the Carnegie Museum expeditions that occurred between 1901 and 1958. -

Sexual and gender-based violence are complicated issues made more complex because university and college campuses are embedded in larger societies. As employees of postsecondary institutions, we can not be entirely responsible for stopping all forms of sexual violence and harassment. However, we can work together to create inclusive learning environments that support survivors and advance the university's commitment to end sexual violence through education, prevention and outreach. This workshop will begin by examining the impacts of sexual violence within the postsecondary context and discuss how we can work together to start a campus-wide conversation around preventing sexual violence. -

For almost a decade she has been supporting teaching assistants, graduate students, and faculty in their teaching development, and has taught graduate level courses on university teaching and learning. She has a PhD in Environmental Health Psychology, and currently holds an Assistant Professor rank with the Jo Watts Williams School of Education at Elon University and an Adjunct Professor status through the School of Health and Human Performance at Dalhousie University.
Teaching Assistants and new Instructors juggle a variety of tasks in a course, from marking and providing feedback facilitating face-to-face and online learning, and navigating building a professional relationship with students. This session will cover topics such as: quick teaching tricks to integrate into your courses, managing workloads, and strategies for navigating your role as a teacher and a learner. Whether you are new to being a TA, returning to the role this September, or will be supporting TAs in your own course, or new to teaching at Nipissing, join us for a session on how to support your work! -
