Aanjibimaadisiwin - Indigenous-Specific Responses to Sexual Violence
Join in for a day of learning and discussion on Indigenous-specific responses to sexual violence. This event provides a safe space for Indigenous and allied students, academics and service providers to learn together about how two community-based organizations are addressing the issue of sexual violence through cultural and traditional perspectives.
Morning sessions:
- Muskoka Parry Sound Community Sexual Assault Service, a leader in Indigenous-specific supports for survivors, has partnered with Drs. Nancy Stevens and Rosemary Nagy to assess how its services meet Indigenous needs.
- Community Living Six Nations, in collaboration with Professor Anna Przednowek and fourth-year BSW student Pam Forest, will discuss its work supporting Indigenous people with physical and developmental disabilities who have experienced sexual violence.
Afternoon sessions:
- Dr. Tyson Stewart and his students will present their creative interpretations of endings for Richard Wagamese’s unfinished novel.
- A hackathon-style Program Pitch will challenge participants to develop Indigenous-specific programs for survivors of sexual violence. Student teams will receive mentorship and pitch their ideas to a panel of adjudicators. Participation can be added to students’ Records of Student Development, and prizes will be awarded to the top three pitches.
The event will also feature an outdoor fire at the tipi beside the library, a smudging ceremony at the entrance and a display of photos from the Visioning Our Healing photovoice project.
Lunch and dinner will be provided. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
