NU Gateway

We know the transition to online learning brought about by COVID-19 has led to feelings of uncertainty amongst students and their families. To ensure all incoming students feel connected to the Lakers community and have a successful transition to university life, Nipissing University has launched a brand new online support program for first-year students called the NU Gateway.

Your NU Gateway Community

New Student Orientation 2018

As a first-year student, you will be assigned to an NU Gateway Community - a group of 30 students - to connect with online. Each Community will have a Community Leader (upper-year student) to run activities and keep you engaged, and an NU Gateway Coach (staff member) to provide personalized support to help you achieve your personal, academic and social goals.

Your NU Gateway Coach will reach out to you in late July or early August to learn about your needs and interests, and to connect you with your Community Leader and community.

With the dedicated support of your NU Gateway community, you will learn to navigate the resources and supports available to you to set you up for success in your first year, and get the most out of your university experience.

Program Features

Individualized Goal Setting

Your NU Gateway Coach will reach out to set up a time to chat about your goals. The NU Gateway Program is personalized to you, so this meeting will set us on the right path together.

Knowledge of Supports and Resources

As a first-year student, you will experience many changes and transitions. Your NU Gateway team will help you navigate these changes so that you feel confident and prepared for classes.

Your NU Gateway team will build your awareness and knowledge of services available across the University and guide you through navigating resources remotely during your first year, such as Library Services, Technology Services, and E-Learning support.

Proactive Guidance

Your NU Gateway Coach and Community Leader will proactively reach out to you to answer any questions you may have about your first-year experience and to support your successful transition to life as a Laker. The guidance provided through the NU Gateway Program will help you find your way efficiently and effectively.

Personalized Support

Based on your goals, interests, and needs, we will connect you to the right people at the University to ensure your success. Your NU Gateway Coach and Community Leader are experts in understanding all the services available to you and are eager to help you make the most of your Nipissing experience.

Peer Connection

Through the NU Gateway you will be part of an online student community based on your interests. The communities will be guided by Community Leaders who will help you feel more connected with your peers by hosting group events and activities, and highlighting opportunities for you to get involved in the Lakers community.

Skill Development

The NU Gateway Program will provide you with opportunities to further develop the skills and competencies that individually support your success and career aspirations as you prepare for Canada’s future skills-based economy.

What's in a name?
Why “NU Gateway”?

The Gateway Arch is an iconic landmark in North Bay, the hometown of the Nipissing University Lakers, that serves a welcome to the city and a symbol of North Bay's geographic location - an interconnecting link for both north-south and east-west traffic.

Much like the Gateway Arch, the NU Gateway Program serves as a starting point for incoming Lakers, a gateway to new opportunities, and an interconnecting link for the students, staff, faculty and resources that make up the Lakers community.

What is the NU Promise Program?

The NU Promise Program is designed to complement the support provided by the NU Gateway Program and further enrich your student experience at Nipissing University. The NU Promise Program is a multi-year program that provides you with a Student Success Coordinator to help you navigate three core pillars of your undergraduate experience: Academic Success, Engagement and Self-Development, and Career Development.  For more information on the NU Promise Program, visit
