POSITION TITLE: Academic Success Program Student Assistant, Math and Science

HOURS OF WORK: Up to 20 hours per week
RATE OF PAY: $17.60/hour plus 4% Vacation Pay
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Academic Success Program (ASP) Student Assistant, Math and Science assists the Student Learning Coordinator, Math and Science by providing academic support to their peers through academic peer coaching, referrals, resource development, and outreach. The ASP Student Assistant, Math and Science acts as a mentor by challenging, supporting, and guiding students towards academic success by identifying their personal strengths and creating a plan of action to address their academic concerns.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
The Academic Success Program Student Assistant, Math and Science will assist with the following:
- Connecting students (including those who are academically at-risk) to the Academic Success Program through various outreach initiatives;
- Assist in the development of individualized Academic Success Plans;
- Conducting one-on-one conversations with students to monitor progress and provide resources and referrals when appropriate;
- Facilitate and promote Student Success opportunities;
- Research and gather data relating to best practices within Student Development and Services;
- Creation of dynamic and engaging communication strategies to support student success;
- Participate in ongoing professional development including in-service opportunities provided by the department;
- Assist in the completion of utilization and satisfaction reports; and
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must apply and be approved for the NUWORK Program
- Student (2nd year and above) with strong academic standing (cumulative average of 75% or higher).
- Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
- Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
- Knowledge of Nipissing University programs, initiatives, and services that promote student success.
- Be available for a minimum 6 hours per week during 8:30-4:30 timeslot.
