For Those Considering Law School
Nipissing University is an excellent choice to obtain the necessary prerequisites for admission consideration to law school.
Currently in Canada there are 24 accredited law schools (Dalhousie University, Lakehead University, McGill University, Queen's University, Thompson Rivers University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Université de Moncton, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke, Université du Québec à Montréal, Université du Québec en Outaouais, Université Laval, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, University of Manitoba, University of New Brunswick, University of Ottawa, University of Saskatchewan, University of Toronto, University of Victoria, University of Windsor, Western University, and York University). Each law school has its own unique admission requirements. A minimum of two to three years of undergraduate study is required to be eligible to apply to law school. Most applicants will have more. There is no one specific degree or major that is required for admission to law school. Most students will choose to pursue an undergraduate degree in either Political Science or Criminal Justice (Nipissing offers both) although this is not necessary. It is advisable that students choose a degree or major that suits their interests. Students should also consider programs and/or courses that will assist them in developing skills in areas such as problem-solving, critical reading, writing, communication, listening, research, organization, and management. Students may wish to consider taking courses in Economics, English, History, Math, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology as part of their undergraduate degree. Nipissing University offers courses in all these areas. It is also recommended that students seek ways to develop some of these skills through non-academic means (i.e., extracurricular activities, life experiences). Students interested in applying to law school in the future should consult the schools to which they will be applying to ensure that they have chosen appropriate courses to meet admission requirements.
In addition to academic requirements students will be required to write the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) and submit a personal statement and references.
Nipissing University is known for its individual attention and research. The opportunity to work one-on-one with professors and to gain graduate level research experience as an undergraduate student is something that can’t be found at every university. These unique opportunities will assist students with some of the non-academic criteria necessary for law school.
A minimum of three years of study is required to complete a law program followed up by a year of articling.

(Outgoing Student from Nipissing University)University she went to: University of Mannheim (Germany)
Taking this opportunity to me was a no-brainer to go and travel, experience another university, different lifestyle of North Bay [and] meet different people.
The university I went to [had] a big exchange program, so they had people from everywhere around the world. It’s made my perspective so much wider to where I want to go after Nipissing.
Some advice I would give is just to say yes to life and to get up and go. You’re not going to look back in 10 years and say “I wish I didn’t go on this exchange,” you’re going to look back and say “Wow I had a chance to travel the world and do school at the exact same time.”

(Incoming Student to Nipissing University)University she came from: Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea)
Go for it!! Embrace the local culture, get involved in campus activities, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You can travel during reading weeks and spend your time exploring. I highly recommend Nipissing University to study and experience real local life in an adorable city. Also, pack lots of warm clothes - Canadian winters no joke, but they’re also part of the fun!
The school events were so memorable and gave me great opportunities to make new friends. I wanted to experience real life in other countries with local friends. My priority was to get to know myself better through exchange programs.

International Student Mentorship Program

The International Student Mentorship Program (ISMP) is designed to help international students develop friendships and adjust to their new learning and living environment. The mentors are Nipissing University are students who volunteer their time to help support you! Some mentors may have studied abroad and others might be interested in going overseas in the future, but all of them have an interest in meeting new people and learning about different cultures. The mentors are responsible for organizing trips, social events and activities for international students. We recommend all new international students participate in ISMP, but it is not mandatory.
Members of the ISMP team are also available throughout the school year to help answer any questions you may have about your courses, campus procedures, on- campus living, the North Bay community and much more!
The Nipissing International Support office will send you an email prior to your arrival at Nipissing University. You will have the opportunity to meet with the mentors and participate in individual meetings as well as group events. It is important to keep in mind that our mentors are students as well, and although they have schoolwork and jobs of their own, they will do their best to help meet your needs.

This program also trains its mentors to connect international students with personal and academic supports available to them at the University.
The program fosters and facilitates cross-cultural learning with a focus on supporting students with their transition to life in Canada and at Nipissing University.
The International Student Mentorship Program is also a registered activity for Nipissing University’s Record of Student Development (RSD).
