Nipissing University launches new micro-credential promoting health and wellness in Anishinaabe communities

North Bay, ON – Nipissing University has launched a new, online micro-credential titled, Wiidooktaadyang (We are Helping One Another): Promoting Health and Wellness in Anishinaabe Communities, focused on increasing knowledge of Indigenous health and wellness.

Developed in partnership with Nipissing First Nation, this three-module micro-credential is highly interactive, self-directed, and aims to strengthen the capacity of any person interested in learning about strengths-based health and wellness from an Anishinaabe perspective. Wiidooktaadyang is a Nbisiing Nishnaabe term meaning “we are helping one another” and it describes a philosophy of care developed by the people of Nipissing First Nation.

Led by Dr. Cindy Peltier, Chair of Indigenous Education and Associate Professor at Nipissing University, participants in the course will develop an understanding of Indigenous peoples’ health, culture as a foundation of care, and engage with practical learning to promote holistic health and wellness as a priority in their work with Indigenous peoples.

“Through a reciprocal partnership between Nipissing First Nation and Nipissing University, this co-created micro-credential marks a step toward reconciliation where we honoured community voice and Anishinaabe knowledge to chart the way forward,” shared Dr. Peltier. “Rooted in Nbisiing Nishnaabe knowledge, this course features transferrable lessons for anyone committed to reconciliation, especially those considering a career in the helping professions.”

The micro-credential is open to all including post-secondary students and new graduates, Nipissing First Nations service providers, and anyone interested in learning about the health and wellness of Anishinaabe people and communities. The course fee is $225 per person and upon successful completion, learners will receive a digital badge to add to their professional portfolios.

The development of Wiidooktaadyang was made possible through funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Ontario Micro-Credential Challenge Fund as well as technical supports from the Teaching Hub and Extended Learning teams at Nipissing University
