Job Description:
The Resource Teacher shares with the classroom teacher responsibility for the organization, planning, revision and assessment of programs for special needs students and students with exceptional needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the identification of special needs students.
- Assessment and diagnosis of students’ needs.
- Program planning, development and/or modification.
- -Monitoring of program implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of programs for special needs students.
- Demonstrating teaching strategies specific to their program recommendations.
- Provision of direct service to students when appropriate.
- Coordination/organization of related areas i.e.: vision/hearing screening.
- Coordination of referral process and procedures.
- Coordinates and monitors the work of the Educational Assistants.
- Participates in student support team (Bill 13).
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Principal.
Relationships
- Reports to the Principal.
- Maintains a close liaison with teachers, parents, counsellors, school psychologists, speech pathologists, special needs teachers, other resource teachers, district coordinators and the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services.
Required Skills:
- A Manitoba Teacher's Certificate or eligibility for teacher certification in the Province of Manitoba.
Resource Teacher Certificate or willingness to work towards such certification. - Experience preparing Student Specific Plans and related document will be considered an asset.
- Experience doing extensive assessments to help design student programming.
- Experience supporting students that have additional needs, alternative programming and an understanding of programming criteria will be considered an asset.
- Familiar with Standards for Appropriate Educational Programming in Manitoba.
- Have a working knowledge of diverse abilities, including strengths, challenges and possible strategies to use with students that have a range of diagnoses.
- Design, implement and evaluate instructional programs that enhance personal development and increase the general quality of life.
- Knowledge of K-12 Manitoba Curriculum and cross-curricular planning.
- Ability to work well with teachers/educational assistants in a collaborative and consultative environment.
- Strong leadership abilities; demonstrated professional commitment and above average interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of an educational team.
- Excellent classroom management skills.
- A commitment to culturally proficient education.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in the differentiation of instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
- Ability to build program with a northern perspective.
- A knowledge and sensitivity to the traditions and aspirations of students with diverse abilities and backgrounds.
