Ferguson Making Sense

Congratulations to Dr. Kristen Ferguson, associate professor of language arts in the Schulich School of Education, on the recent publication of two books with Oxford University Press.

Literacy: Reading, Writing, and Children's Literature is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to balanced literacy instruction and learning for pre-service and in-service teachers. Tailored for Canadians, this practical and current text provides a theoretical foundation alongside real-world classroom examples for teaching the foundational skills of literacy.

Making Sense in Education: A Student's Guide to Research and Writing is an essential how-to guide for education students and teacher candidates that includes tips for academic writing (including essays), as well as professional writing for audiences unique to the teaching profession (parents, students, administrators, etc.).  It also includes chapters on Giving an Oral Presentation; Active Listening, Group Work, and Co-operative Learning; Creating an Education Portfolio and Reflective Writing; and Curriculum Planning and Reporting Student Work. New coverage includes unit and lesson planning, active listening with parents, and how to create newsletters and e-portfolios.
