Nipissing University Unveils Five-Year Strategic Research Plan to Kickoff First Annual Research Month

Nipissing University is pleased to announce the launch of its five-year strategic research plan, a document which will provide a framework to inform decision making and communicate research success. The launch of the plan also marks the start of the first annual research month at Nipissing University, which features a series of events throughout March designed to share with the community the impact of research at the local, national, and international levels.

The five-year strategic research plan (2019-2024) will serve as a living document which identifies, encourages, supports, and oversees, research at Nipissing University, providing tangible opportunities to improve research culture across the institution. The plan further identifies research achievements of the university in the fields of Indigenous and Decolonial Research, Environment and Natural Resources, Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences, the Human Condition, Conflict Resolution, and Inequality. The plan will further efforts to improve research at Nipissing University, which has already seen a near-doubling of research funding over the last six years, totalling an impressive $12.7 million.

“Nipissing University has a unique opportunity to promote high-quality research and contribute to the local physical and economic landscape of northeastern Ontario,” said Dr. Jim McAuliffe, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at Nipissing University. “We’re excited to showcase Discover Research at Nipissing University, our first annual research month, and demonstrate how research conducted right here in North Bay have wide-ranging and meaningful impacts.”

Throughout March, Nipissing University will highlight events designed to bring together the university and North Bay community, centered around the theme of accessible research. Among the events are the Undergraduate Research Conference, where students have an opportunity to present a research project they are working on while engaging in scholarly debate amongst each other, and the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, a global event featuring Masters and Doctoral students who must present their research and the wider community impact in three minutes or less to a panel of North Bay community judges.

Rounding out the major events will be NU360, an event which will be held at The Grande Event Centre in North Bay, featuring six faculty speakers presenting their research in six minutes. Beyond the major events, a series of faculty and student driven workshops, as well as the celebration of an art exhibition, will also be taking place.

All community members are invited to attend the three major research month events. The Undergraduate Research Conference will be held from March 22-23rd on the Nipissing University campus, the Three-Minute Thesis Competition will be held on March 19th at 6:00pm, in Room A137 at Nipissing University, and NU360 will be held on March 27th at 6:00pm, at the Grande Event Centre.
