Mathematics student presents summer research

Nipissing’s Department of Computer Science and Mathematics presents a discussion, titled Bases of products of finite dimensional metric compacta, on Friday, October 9, at 11:30 a.m. in A223.

The discussion will be lead by Bradley Lalonde, NSERC USRA summer research student, who worked with Dr. Vesko Valov, professor of Mathematics at Nipissing University, over the course of the summer

Here’s an abstract:

It is well known that every point of a finite-dimensional metric homogeneous absolute neighbourhood retract (ANR) has a base possessing properties similar to the local base at any point of the corresponding Euclidean space. The natural question arises whether every point (x,y) from a product XxY of two metric finite-dimensional compacta X and Y has a base B(x,y) with the same properties such that B(x,y) is a product of two bases B(x) and B(y) at the points x and y, respectively. In this talk the author provides a proof of such a result.
