CFUW Celebrates 100 Years with Anniversary Scholarship

In celebration of its centennial anniversary, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) recently granted a $1,000 scholarship to Nipissing University PhD student, Melissa Corrente.

Founded in 1919, CFUW is a national organization dedicated to improving the status of women through promotion of human rights, public education, and peace. CFUW aims to ensure all women have equal opportunities and equal access to quality education within a peaceful and secure environment where they feel respected. Every year, close to $1 million is awarded to help women pursue post-secondary studies.

The CFUW North Bay chapter, one of 100 clubs nationwide, already funds three annual scholarships for Nipissing University students, however this year the club decided to mark 100 years of supporting women’s education by offering an additional one-time scholarship to a deserving student.  The anniversary scholarship has enabled Melissa to pursue her dreams and focus her energy on her family and the completion of her degree.

Melissa holds both a Bachelor of Education and Master of Education and is currently working towards her PhD in Education with hopes of graduating in June 2020. Her thesis, ‘Exploring the Experience of Graduate Studies within the Context of Parenthood’, examines the realities of balancing life as both a graduate student and parent. Through her research, Melissa draws attention to relationships through education and personal life and how these roles compete and change over time.
