Sundin Golden at Ontario Weightlifting Competition

Jenni Sundin has taken the gold medal in the 63kg category at the Ontario Weightlifting Association’s Scholastic Challenge. Sundin, an international student in Nipissing’s Bachelor of Physical Health and Education, also managed to qualify for the Swedish Nationals in May, based on her performance. The contest, hosted by the Canadore Panthers and Norsemen and Valkyries clubs, featured male and female athletes competing for individual weight class medals as well as team awards at the post-secondary, high school, and elementary levels.

Sundin was the winner in the 63 kg category with a total of 138 kilos. She made 57 kilos in the snatch and 81 kilos in the clean and jerk. Sundin is a member of the Kalmar Athletic Club of Sweden, where she is coached by Andreas Fransson and Björn Andersson. “I felt really confident about it. When I did my 78 kg it was a relief because it meant that I qualified for nationals back home in Sweden,” said Sundin. “But I still had some power left and it was my goal to get over 80 so I aimed for 81 and it was awesome!”

Sundin’s exchange has been a busy time filled with academics, new friends, and weightlifting. “I have had a great time as an international student. I have had good relationships with all my teachers who are very helpful when I need it. The students are also very kind and understanding when I don't get the language right. I now have some awesome friends, both from here and the other international students.”
