This week marks a critical juncture in university recruitment in Ontario, as more than 120,000 students and parents visit the Ontario Universities' Fair in downtown Toronto to learn more about Ontario universities and Nipissing University is ready.
Nipissing is sending a team of 67 knowledgeable individuals to share their insights on how and why this university is such a fantastic place in which to learn and live.  The team is made up of 15 faculty members, 14 students, one member of the Board of Governors, two alumni, and 35 staffers representing recruiters, executives, admissions personnel and other key staff in various departments from financial aid, and education placements, to lab instructors and technology experts.

“Our strategy in recruitment is based on the sense of community that exists at Nipissing.  We strive to make personal connections with people one-to-one to find out about their interests and see where those interests intersect with what Nipissing offers,” said Gemma Victor, manager of student recruitment. “Nipissing is a unique place, offering academic excellence in a very inclusive and welcoming community.  It’s our goal to show students why Nipissing may be the best choice for their university career.”

Nipissing is bucking the trend again this year on giveaways at the fair, opting for philanthropy over trinkets.  This year the university will donate $1 to Breakfast for Learning (www.breakfastforlearning.ca) for every student who signs up to receive more information about Nipissing.

Breakfast for Learning is a national charity that educates, and empowers communities to deliver school based nutrition programs, helping children and youth realize their full potential in life. It works to ensure all children and youth in Canada attend school well nourished and ready to learn.

“Rather than giving away a typical branded trinket, we wanted to engage with students on something more consequential and reflective of the socially conscious culture that exists on campus,” said Kelly Brown, supervisor, marketing, advertising and publications.  “We follow up with each student who participates and provide a summary of the total donation made on their behalf.”

Last year, the charity Shannon's Dream received a $6,000 donation from Nipissing’s Ontario University Fair initiative.

The fair takes place September 23 - 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

The free three-day event gives next year's university hopefuls all the information they need to make an informed decision about where to apply, with first-hand accounts about university programs and campus life from professors, staff and current students.
