First week back offers lots of events for Lakers Reorientation

Lakers Reorientation Week takes place January 9-14 and the Student Learning and Transitions team has an exciting week of events lined up to welcome new and returning students back to campus.

The focus of Lakers Reorientation Week is to assist students in their path to self-discovery, degree completion, and intellectual growth.  The program includes events and activities arranged into five themes:

  • Welcome Back
  • Involvement
  • Wellness
  • Academics
  • Diversity & Equity

Events launch first thing on Monday morning, January 9, at 8:00 a.m. with the President’s Pancake Breakfast in room A246.  This event is free to all students.

Later that day, from 1 – 4 p.m., activities shift to a Lip Sync Battle in H246 hosted by the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU).  At 5 p.m., the Gen1 Mature and Transfer Student network will host a dinner in A246.

Events on Tuesday, January 11, highlight opportunities for students to get involved on campus and will feature a Record of the Student Development (RSD) drop-in, as well as involvement opportunities with NUSU, the AskMe Team, New Student Orientation (NSO), Student Accessibility Services, NU Perspectives, and Peer Tutoring.

The day will finish with a free Lakers Themed Zumba class in Gym A at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre at 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, January 12 focusses on student wellness with a Healthy Living and Wellness Fair in the NU Hallway starting at 10 a.m. 

Grounded Studios and 3 Fires Martial Arts Academy will join us to offer free Chair Yoga and Theory of Self-Defense classes at 1 p.m. in A228, and 2 p.m. in B208, respectively.

NU Perspectives will offer their Bringing in the Bystander and Consent + Training as well.  Please RSVP to this event by emailing nupresepctives@nipissingu.ca.

NUSU will host a Let’s Talk About Consent Baby, Over Dinner in A246 at 5pm.

Thursday, January 12, will feature group-learning opportunities developed and facilitated by current Nipissing University Students:

  • Jack Chevrefils, will host The Frugal Scholar at 10 a.m., in A120,
  • Brendan Cotter will host Public Speaking and Presentation Skills at noon in A246;
  • Peer Tutors, will be serving hot chocolate in the NU Hallway from 2-4 p.m.
  • Other events to support student success will include:
  • Managing Test Anxiety at 11 a.m. in H160
  • Grad School 101 at 1 p.m., H160; and
  • Syllabus Social at 2:30 p.m. in H160

Friday, January 13, will be an exciting day highlighting diversity and equity on campus and in our community. The Equity Centre will host an open house in A244 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. followed by a Student’s for Social Change Forum in A250.

That afternoon, a panel of current Nipissing University students will share their stories of privilege and marginalized identities on our campus and in our local community during the Power & Privilege Panel 2:30-3:30 p.m. in F213.

Following the panel, refreshments will be provided by Twiggs and a Diversity and Equity Book Display will be on offer in the NU Foyer.

After the refreshments, everyone will be welcomed back into the theater for a special presentation on Intercultural Communication by Meg Ramore of the North Bay Multicultural Centre.  The talk will explore ideas on how members of a university community can lead the way to becoming more inclusive.

Lakers Reorientation Week wraps up on Saturday, January 14, with Lakers Pride day.

All students, staff, and faculty are invited to enter our Cheer Competition for chances at some great prizes. More information about the competition is available, here.
The Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre doors will open at 3 p.m.,  and students are invited to come early for free pizza and photos, followed by the Cheer Competition at 4 p.m. and then the Lakers women’s volleyball team will face off with Trent at 5 p.m. followed by the men’s team at 7 p.m.
