A group of students recently embarked on field trip as business consultants to a nearby resort where they could apply management theories and concepts learned in class to a real world setting. The work was included in the fourth-year Field-Based Consulting Project course, which is part of the iLEAD program offered to business students.
The thirteen students, led by faculty member Linda Piper, travelled to Camp Petawachuan, located on Dokis First Nation reserve on the French River. There, they engaged in experiential learning by working in teams to examine different aspects of the business management like human resources, marketing, accounting, finance and general business administration. They engaged in field-based research and used different collection methods and reflective practice to organize the data into a report for their client.
“Its important that students gain valuable, real-life experience applying what they’ve learned in-class,” said Traci Malkowski, project coordinator in the school of business. “The students enjoyed their time at the resort and got to have some fun there, but they were very focused on the consulting work and finding practical ways to help the resort.”
The students are currently finalizing their work, creating professional presentation for the camp owner to see at the end of November.?
