Kevin Salzman - One in a million

On Thursday, December 15, 2011, Nipissing student Kevin Salzman became 1 of 7000 medal bearers in the Rick Hansen Relay that passed through Sudbury to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Hansen’s famous Man in Motion Tour. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Kevin and he felt privileged to be representing Nipissing as he wheeled 250 metres, while proudly wearing the medal around his neck. Kevin was an inspiration to the other relay members and they were moved by his life story.
Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age, Salzman has been in a wheelchair for most of his life. He continually perseveres and has given inspirational speeches on the topic of “Beyond Borders, Beyond Boundaries and Beyond Limitations” in Canada and the United States. Salzman is planning his own coast-to-coast Wheel Across Canada tour in the Spring to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy and has been training for the past year.
A recipient of a 2009 Dave Marshall Leadership Award, Salzman graduated with an English degree last June. He is currently working on a degree in Gender Equality and Social Justice.
One of the Rick Hansen Relay organizers told the participants that there are 7000 medal bearers and 7 billion people in the world, therefore they are all one in a million. Without a doubt Kevin has proven that he is one in a million.
