Near North Voices concert features oboist Brophey

Erin Brophey returns to North Bay for oboe concert

Near North Voices, North Bay’s University-Community Choir, is pleased to announce their first concert of the 2015-2016 season:Journeys: Exploring stories of travel and transformation in poetry and song, on Saturday January 30, 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church (399 Cassells St., North Bay).
The concert will feature Erin Brophey, principal oboist in the Saskatoon Symphony, in several works for oboe and choir. Originally from North Bay, Brophey is pleased to perform in her hometown again, this time alongside her mother, Karen, who is a member of Near North Voices. The concert will also feature several musicians from the North Bay Symphony Orchestra: violinist Olga Rykov, cellist Jordan Wyshniowsky, and percussionist Matthew Whitehead.

Near North Voices is collaborating with local artist Marianne Vander Dussen, who has created watercolour artworks inspired by five of the works on the concert programme:Here On These Branches by Canadian composer Sarah Quartel;The Pasture by Randall Thompson;Untraveled Worlds by Canadian composer Paul Halley;Woyaya by Sol Amarfio for the Ghanaian band Osibisa; and a Bollywood piece in the Tamil language,Balleilakka by A.R. Rahman. Ms. Vander Dussen’s works will be featured on a set of artisanal greeting cards available for sale following the concert. Prints based on a larger acrylic work also inspired byHere On These Branches will be available at the upcoming Near North Voices’ concert on April 9.

Tickets forJourneys: Exploring stories of travel and transformation in poetry and song cost $20 for general admission, and $10 for university/college students, and are available at Gulliver’s Quality Books and Toys on Main St., from Near North Voices members, or at the door. Tickets are selling fast so interested patrons are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance.
