The Proposed MEd course schedules are subject to change. MEd students are encouraged to enrol in EDUC-5157 Survey of Research Methods and EDUC-5196 Understanding Education at their earliest opportunity when the courses are offered. If completing the MEd degree via the Research Project route, MEd students are encouraged to complete EDUC-5186 Research Project & Seminar at their earliest opportunity after completing the prerequisites (complete 18 credits including EDUC-5157).

MEd Degree Requirements

We recommend that MEd students review the MEd degree requirements prior to registering for a course.

Students admitted to the MEd program prior to September 2010 may follow the previous MEd degree requirements or follow the current MEd degree requirements. The previous and the current MEd degree requirements may not be combined.

Students are required to have regular and unrestricted access to a reliable high speed internet connection and unrestricted access to the resources for online courses.

Part-time students admitted to the MEd program after the 2013/2014​ academic year may enrol in ONE course each term or session. Part-time students admitted to the MEd program PRIOR to 2013/2014 may enrol in TWO courses each term or session.​

Please review the Important Dates and Deadlines Schedule for course withdrawal dates for all MEd students and tuition refund dates for part-time students.

Please check our online bookstore for all required textbooks and/or coursepacks. Textbooks and coursepacks are required for the first day of onsite and online courses.

Please review the Nipissing University policy on course waiting lists.

If you are on a waiting list for a course(s), WebAdvisor will contact you via your Nipissing University e-mail account if a position in the course(s) becomes available and you are next on the waitlist.  From this point, you will have 72 hours to enroll in the course.  If you do not enroll in the course within the specified time, without further notice, WebAdvisor will remove your name from the waitlist and offer the position to the next student on the waitlist. No student will be offered a vacant position who is not on the waitlist.

PLEASE NOTE: You may place your name on more than one waitlist.  You may be enrolled in a course and place your name on one or more waitlists.

Graduate students are required to maintain continuous enrolment every term. Each term (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer), students must register themselves in one of the following via WebAdvisor:

Master of Education:

• ​a 3-credit MEd course, or
• EDUC-5115 Research Paper or EDUC-5454 Thesis or
• GSCF-0500 Program Continuation*

GSCF-0500 GR Ed Program Continuation

In addition to your courses, MEd students will automatically be registered in GSCF-0500: Program Continuation each term, unless there are financial restrictions preventing registration.

If you fail to maintain continuous enrolment, you will be withdrawn from the program.

Depth and breadth of knowledge

A systematic understanding of knowledge, including, where appropriate, relevant knowledge outside the field and/or discipline, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of their academic discipline, field of study, or area of professional practice.

Research and scholarship

A conceptual understanding and methodological competence that:

1. Enables a working comprehension of how established techniques of research and inquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline;
2. Enables a critical evaluation of current research and advanced research and scholarship in the discipline or area of professional competence; and
3. Enables a treatment of complex issues and judgments based on established principles and techniques; and,

On the basis of that competence, has shown at least one of the following:

1. The development and support of a sustained argument in written form; or
2. Originality in the application of knowledge.

Level of application of knowledge

Competence in the research process by applying an existing body of knowledge in the critical analysis of a new question or of a specific problem or issue in a new setting.

Professional capacity/autonomy

1. The qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring:

    

   1. The exercise of initiative and of personal responsibility and accountability; and
   2. Decision-making in complex situations;
2. The intellectual independence required for continuing professional development;
3. The ethical behaviour consistent with academic integrity and the use of appropriate guidelines and procedures for responsible conduct of research; and
4. The ability to appreciate the broader implications of applying knowledge to particular contexts.

Level of communication skills

The ability to communicate ideas, issues and conclusions clearly.

Awareness of limits of knowledge

Cognizance of the complexity of knowledge and of the potential contributions of other interpretations, methods, and disciplines.

Digital copies of theses are accessible through the Harris Learning Library. When accessing the Library online, use your WebAdvisor credentials when prompted for a username and password. Click E-Resources and from the alphabetic listing of e-resources click on Thesis Canada Portal, then enter the title and/or author to search for a specific thesis.

Google searches for these tools outside of the NU system will often result in title only searches, and not full text, in light of our licensing agreements.

All graduate students will follow the School of Graduate Studies MRP/Thesis/Dissertation Final Submission Process.​ 

• The Certificate of Examination will be provided to the student once their Research Supervisor has approved the revisions, if any, that arise from the defence.
• Assume responsibility for checking the digital submissions before submitting them to the School of Graduate Studies. The burden of how the submission look is entirely the responsibility of the student.

NOTES:

• The Certificate of Examination will be provided to the student once their Research Supervisor has approved the revisions, if any, that arise from the review by the Chair of Graduate Studies in Education.
• DO ensure the bookbinder is aware that your document is a Major Research Paper that must be bound in specified green colour (see the SGS Final Submission Process above).
• DO assume responsibility for checking the bound and digitally reproduced copies before submitting them to the School of Graduate Studies.  The burden of how the digital and bound submissions look is entirely the responsibility of the student.
