Show your support on #GivingTuesdayNow

On Tuesday, May 5, Nipissing University will join organizations from across the globe to participate in #GivingTuesdayNow, a day of giving and unity to demonstrate the power of generosity in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current pandemic has caused significant financial hardship for many, and Nipissing University students are no exception. Through the generosity of Nipissing alumni, donors and supporters, the University recently launched a Student Emergency Fund to provide urgent financial assistance to students unable to cover immediate, essential expenses as a result of the crisis.

As the need for financial assistance continues to climb, on #GivingTuesdayNow, we invite those who can, to donate to the Student Emergency Fund at nipissingu.ca/StudentEmergencyFund. To date, a total of 312 student applications to the fund have been received.  The most common needs addressed through the fund include financial distress related to loss of employment, housing insecurity, family and travel. The Fund will continue to be a resource for students in need beyond the lifetime of the pandemic.

Students have expressed sincere gratitude for the support:

“The support I received through The Student Emergency Fund allowed me to put food on the table and give me financial relief during this time of stress/uncertainty. Thank you for helping me and I hope one day I will be able to repay the Nipissing community when I am in the position to do so.”

“The support I have received through the Student Emergency Fund guarantees that I can afford groceries for the next couple of months, which significantly reduces my stress level. During these unpredictable times I have been relying on my parents financially because I am unable to find work, however, my parents, like everyone else, are experiencing financial hardship right now themselves. This generous donation relieves so much stress for me, it is hard to accurately express my appreciation. Without this support, I am unsure how I would have made ends meet this month. I wish I could do more than just say thank you. Please know that your kind actions have made a huge difference in my life, and will make a huge difference in the lives of many students right now. Thank you again, may you stay healthy and safe. I am so thankful to be a part of the Lakers community, now more than ever.”

”I would like to thank you and express my gratitude towards you for this donation. My father is currently in the ICU on life support in critical condition and this is a very difficult time for my family and me to be organized and stay strong. The support I received through The Student Emergency Fund allowed me to pay my rent, buy groceries, and support my family.”

If giving is not possible at this time, please consider posting a written or video message on social media with words of encouragement for our students or tell us how you’re supporting your community. You can use the hashtags #GivingTuesdayNow, #NUGives and tag @nipissingu. Together, we will use the power of philanthropy to lift up our Lakers and strengthen our communities.
