Paul Nelson memorial hockey game – March 9

Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game 2016

Nipissing’s school of physical and health education is proud to host the fifth annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game, Thursday, March 9, at 1 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.
In an archetypal struggle pitting youth and speed versus age and wisdom, the big game features fourth-year Bachelor of Physical Health and Education (BPHE) students facing off against Nipissing University faculty and staff.  In this case, everyone wins, as proceeds raised support the Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship, Kidsport and the Nipissing University Food Bank.

The Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a third or fourth-year student in the School of Physical and Health Education, Coaching course, who exemplifies excellence in the development of their coaching philosophy.

Last years recipient, Sean Winters was honoured to be the recipient of the Paul Nelson Memorial Award.

“Though I did not know Paul personally, I am humbled by his legacy and proud that my coaching philosophy has been recognized as part of our collective contributions to make a difference and give back to our community, as Paul did,” said Winters. “I am reminded to live in the now and try to be a difference maker every day. I would like to thank those involved with the Paul Nelson Memorial Award and the memorial game for organizing this wonderful event honouring Paul's legacy."

Paul Nelson was a hard working and well-respected student in Nipissing’s BPHE program, who volunteered with his local fire department. Paul died in 2012 in a tragic accident while responding to a fire call. To honour his memory, Nelson’s friends and Nipissing BPHE faculty created a scholarship in his name and are raising funds each year by virtue of these hockey games.

Admission to attend the game can be achieved by a donation to the food bank. Students, staff and faculty suiting up to play in the game, pay a small fee to raise money in support of the scholarship and Kidsport.
