Lakers celebrate CIS Academic All-Canadians

Athletics CIS Award Winners 2015

As the Nipissing Lakers athletic program continues to grow, so does the provincial and national recognition the student-athletes receive. Last Friday, the Lakers celebrated 32 student-athletes that excel in the classroom as well as on the field, in the gym and on the ice.

Find out what Academic All-Canadians Brogan Bailey, Val Confesor and Kajsa Heyes had to say about how Nipissing has helped them achieve success, what it takes to balance school and sport and where they hope to go next in this short video.

In 1988, the CIS introduced its first Academic All-Canadians, those exceptional student-athletes who achieve an academic standing of 80 per cent or better, all while playing on one of their university’s varsity teams.  A CIS Academic All-Canadian distinction is one of the highest recognitions a university student-athlete can receive.

Student-athletes at Nipissing University strive for excellence in sport, academics and in the community.  They spend more than 20 hours per week on school work, while committing at least another 20 hours to athletics, as they practice daily and compete most weekends.

On top of this, many student-athletes find the time to volunteer with various community organizations.

The athletes who earn this prestigious honour are inspirational to the Nipissing community and Lakers Athletics congratulates them for their work ethic and determination.

This year, the Lakers more than doubled their number from 2013, moving from 15 to 32 in 2014.

This year’s winners come from every CIS varsity sport and Nipissing University is proud to have such strong representatives.
