A team of researchers from Nipissing’s geography department and computer science and mathematics department recently hosted scientists from Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC). The group was conducting field work as part of the ongoing research project using remote sensing and environmental monitoring to increase agricultural productivity in Northern Ontario.Together, the group added new specialized soil moisture and temperature monitoring systems to existing data collection devices on three local farms. The data collected will be shared amongst farmers, Nipissing researchers and federal government scientists.
This research project, funded by NOHFC, enhances the knowledge capacity of farmers by providing timely research and information on issues such as soil drainage, environmental monitoring, climate data and yield estimates.
The Nipissing professors leading the project are Dr. John Kovacs, Dr. Dan Walters, Dr. April James and Dr. Mark Wachowiak.
