Nipissing students and Ontario's 30% off tuition program

On January 5, 2012, The Ontario government announced that it would provide 30% off tuition for full-time undergraduate students in Ontario who meet the following eligibility requirements:

Eligibility

The New 30% off Ontario Tuition grant will be provided to the students if:

  • They are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a protected person;
  • They are an Ontario resident;
  • It has been less than four years since they left high school (or less than six years if they have a permanent disability)
  • Their parent(s)’ gross income is $160,000 or less;
  • They are a full-time student at a public university or college in Ontario; and
  • They are in a program that they applied to and entered directly out of high school (a first-entry program).

The benefit delivered by this new program is $1,600 on a full year basis for university students in a degree program. For the January 2012 term, eligible students will receive half of the full year benefit, which is $800. Students will be eligible for the grant for up to two terms per academic year.

Delivery

The delivery of the new grant for the Winter 2012 and Spring/Summer 2012 terms is being administered by OSAP staff.

Students on OSAP will be automatically assessed and do not need to apply.

The eligibility of students already on OSAP will be automatically assessed. These students will receive emails and status updates through established OSAP channels and their grant will be delivered through direct deposit or cheque. In some instances, we will need some additional information from these students, who we will contact directly as needed. We anticipate that OSAP students will receive their grant by late January or early February.

Students not on OSAP need to apply

For eligible students not on OSAP, the province has opened an online application. Students will need to complete this short application, and students and parents will need to mail or fax a signed consent form to the province’s OSAP office in Thunder Bay. OSAP will verify family income with the federal government.

OSAP staff will need to confirm enrolment of all applicants with staff in colleges and universities.

Important: The deadline for applying for this grant for the Winter 2012 semester is March 31, 2012.
