Lakers Volleyball women’s team claim silver in first pre-season action

The Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team walked away with a silver medal at the Fred Wannamaker Invitational Tournament hosted by Sheridan College over the weekend. This was the Lakers’ first game action of the year in a tournament that featured top teams from both the OCAA’s East and West divisions.
On Friday, the Lakers defeated Seneca 2-0 and Loyalist 2-1.
“It was obvious from a consistency and team play standpoint that this was our first game action,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle. “To the team’s credit, they made significant strides as the tournament progressed.”
Saturday, the Lakers defeated a much improved Durham team 2-0 and lost to longtime rivals Humber 2-0.
The Lakers finished second in pool play and defeated Mohawk 2-0 and Trent 2-1 to reach the final against Humber. In the final, Humber prevailed 2-0 (25-18, 25-21) to claim the title.
“Considering Humber has already played a significant number of matches against some OUA competition I thought we played well for long stretches in both matches. I think the major difference was execution in crucial times, and Humber was a little more polished in that department,” added LaRochelle.
The Lakers will be back in action Saturday at noon as they host an exhibition match against Cambrian as part of the 2012 Homecoming celebrations.
