Lakers volleyball action

The men’s and women’s volleyball squads were in action last weekend against the Humber Hawks and Conestoga Condors. While the men’s team continued to dominate heading into the OCAA championships (March 23-25 at Nipissing University), the women’s team faltered, forcing a do-or-die match up to qualify for the OCAA championships this Sunday in the Surtees gym.Lakers continue to rollThe Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team continued their strong season by sweeping a pair of weekend matches to improve to 16-1 on the season keeping pace with the Humber Hawks.
On Saturday, the Lakers overpowered the Fanshawe Falcons 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17). To the Falcons credit, however, they made some spectacular defensive plays that created some entertaining rallies for the crowd on hand.
Fourth-year graduating player Dave Hudson handled the setting duties and distributed the ball well to his hitter. Andre Leblanc led the offence with 15 points, while brothers Adam and Scott Coulthard each added 10 points.
On Sunday, the Conestoga Condors put up little resistance as the Lakers easily swept their opponents 3-0.
The Lakers have one remaining regular season game TONIGHT! against their cross-campus rivals the Canadore Panthers at 8 p.m. in the Education Centre Gym.

The Nipissing Lady Lakers took a step backwards in their hopes of making the OCAA provincial championship by dropping a crucial 3-1 decision to the Fanshawe Falcons in a game with significant playoff implications.
The loss drops the Lady Lakers regular record to 12-4 and leaves them in third place in the West division standings while forcing a sudden death cross-over match to be held this Sunday at noon at the Surtees Gym. The winner of Sunday’s contest will advance to the OCAA championship hosted by Georgian College.
“Right now our biggest problem is that we are individuals playing a team game,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle. “I do, however, give Fanshawe a lot of credit, they wanted that game. They displayed a lot of passion and won the one-on-one battles for most of the match.”
On Sunday, in a game that had little impact on the standings, the Lady Lakers defeated the Conestoga Condors 3-0.
The Lady Lakers will play their final game of the regular season tonight, when they take on their cross-campus rivals the Canadore Panthers at 6 p.m. in the Education Centre Gym.
