With a win over the Ryerson Rams, the Nipissing Lakers hockey team extended their unbeaten streak to three games, though the regular season has yet to begin.Last Friday night, in their third pre-season game of the year, the Lakers beat the Rams 3-2 in front of 1,165 fans at Memorial Gardens.
It was a tough and intense game, with the Rams opening the scoring before the Lakers popped a trio of goals off the sticks of Jeff Leaist, Vern Cooper and Andrew Marcoux, who scored his second game winning goal of the preseason. With time running out, the Rams kept it close, scoring a short-handed goal with 5:13 left on the clock. From there Lakers goaltender Kirk Rafuse refused to let any pucks get through and the Lakers held on for the win.
The Lakers outshot Ryerson 35-28.
The Lakers final preseason game will be played on September 29, when the powerful Western Mustangs visit Memorial Gardens.
The regular season opens October 5 at UQTR, with the home-opener scheduled for October 12 when UQTR makes a return visit.
