Dr. Clendinning talks Titanic

Nipissing University and the History Department Seminar Series is pleased to present a special lecture by Dr. Anne Clendinning on Friday, September 21, at 2:30 p.m. in room A226.Clendinning will discuss her paper: Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon and the 'Money Boat': Class and Cowardice at the Board of Trade Titanic Inquiry.
When the Titanic sank in April 1912, Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon and his wife survived, like many first class passengers; however, they were the only passengers who testified before the British Board of Trade Inquiry into the disaster. The Duff Gordons did this voluntarily, in an attempt to defend themselves against allegations of wrongdoing. The case generated a media frenzy at the time. It illustrates how perceptions of masculinity, bravery and cowardice intersected with material circumstances of social class and occupational expertise in late Edwardian England.
The lecture is free of charge and all are welcome.
